The Story Behind Packaging Design

Glow of Tea series

The birth of the Glow of Tea series is the result of the brand`s careful planning and design in response to the current needs of the times. Its product packaging draws inspiration from the artistic style of Mark Rothko. Rothko`s paintings use large areas of color to express emotion and convey information. Each painting may appear simple, yet it is filled with deep sentiment. Puritea has already had some product designs in the past that convey information through color, and out of a love for the simplicity and power of large areas of color, we often contemplate how to incorporate this design concept into the products of the Glow of Tea series.

The inspiration for this packaging design comes from a British documentary. It depicts the extent of the British people`s love for tea, to the extent that they even developed tea-making utensils that could quickly boil water in tanks for soldiers on the battlefield. It`s fascinating to see that even in times of war, tea is not forgotten. Additionally, the documentary mentions that the UK has the world`s largest tea bag factory, where tea leaves from around the world are selected, graded, blended for flavor, made into tea bags, and then distributed worldwide. The film also notes that 96% of tea produced worldwide is sold in tea bag form, with only 4% sold as loose leaf tea.

After watching this documentary, Glow of Tea was born. With the reality of hand-brewed tea becoming less accessible, it was time to make each tea available in a format that most people could afford: tea bags. At the same time, by using large blocks of color to symbolize the flavors of tea, customers could choose their preferred tea flavor simply by color, without the need for textual information. Just as Mark Rothko expresses emotion and conveys information through color blocks, Puritea presents the flavors of its 15 teas through 15 sets of color blocks, making choosing tea no longer a difficult task.

This is quite an interesting transformation. The packaging design of Glow of Tea not only aims to attract new tea drinkers but also influences traditional tea drinkers. This subtle change demonstrates the impact of packaging design on consumer behavior and preferences.
