Tea leaves bitten by small green leafhoppers still appear intact on the surface, and there are hardly any visible traces of the bites after brewing. It is easiest to observe the bites when the tea leaves are still on the tree, especially the tender tea buds. The bite marks are similar to the red streaks people get after being bitten by mosquitoes, and in large tea gardens, they appear as patches of yellowish color. If we can see traces of insect bites on the tea leaves after brewing, we need to consider whether it was caused by small green leafhoppers or if the leafhoppers have grown teeth.
